Guardian of the Abyss: The Chambered Nautilus
In the spirit of this art show, I chose to paint the chambered nautilus in the abyss along a continental shelf- with little light reaching the depths, the painting is set to show the typical setting of these magnificent creatures. A cousin to the octopus, the nautilus has been around for ~480 million years- before the dinosaurs. They live in the depths of the abyss most of the time, only coming up to a couple hundred feet at night. Sadly, technological advances have allowed humans to reach depths of the ocean to collect them for their highly sought after shells. In 2017, they were listed as a threatened species under the endangered species act. Raising awareness of their existence and the threat they face from collectors was my inspiration for this show. Thank you for your time.
